The Philippines has formally requested the United States government for immigration relief measures to allow eligible Filipinos to stay and work in the United States. Allowing Filipinos to remain in the US will help the country with long-term post-typhoon recovery efforts. The request was made in the wake of Thyphoon Haiyan, which killed more than 6,000 people and displaced more than 4 million and affected more than 12 million during its violent rampage across the Central Philippines last month.
More than 200 Filipino-American organizations in the US, backed by members of the US Senate and House of Representatives, the Catholic Chur and other NGOs have requested Temporary Protected Status (TPS) designation be provided to Filipinos.
